Petty’s Garage – Randleman, NC

At Petty’s Garage: “If you can dream it, we can build it.” Carrying on the family tradition, the garage specializes in the restoration of high-performance vehicles, stock cars, drag racers and Petty signature cars. Everything must be state-of-the-art at Petty’s Garage. Until recently, one critical component of the operation was not: the facility’s lighting. Petty’s Garage worked with Greenleaf Energy Solutions to remedy the situation. Certain that LED lighting was the way to go, Greenleaf collaborated with Cree. “We knew that Cree produces the best LED lighting technology in the world,” says Stephen Moffitt, energy consultant, Greenleaf Energy Solutions. “They were the clear choice for Petty’s Garage.”

Greenleaf has now installed more than 700 Cree LED lights throughout the entirety of the Petty complex. These include CR24™ LED troffers in the main production facility with LR24™ LED troffers and CS18™ LED linear luminaires elsewhere — all featuring Cree TrueWhite® Technology, with no toxic mercury. The next stage of the installation will bring Cree Edge™ security and floodlights and LEDway® streetlights.

The implementation decreases the overall number of light fixtures needed by 10 percent. Also, lighting energy usage is reduced by more than 50 percent — further evidence for the Greenleaf team that going with Cree was the right call. “With Cree, we know that when we’re out selling to our customers, we’re giving them the best possible LED products that you can get,” Moffitt says.

Richard Petty echoes that sentiment: “When the Cree lights were installed, I said, ‘Man, why hadn’t we done this before?’”

Most importantly, Petty’s Garage is now able to operate even more effectively. “With the kind of work we do, good lighting is everything,” says Petty’s Garage paint specialist Bunk Long. “These lights are just tremendously better than what we had before.”

The payoff is more precise detail work and truer colors. “Once we get through with a car now,” Petty says, “it looks like a brand-new shiny penny.”

And the Cree LED lighting was a cinch to install. “Our crew couldn’t believe how light the fixtures were and how great they fit,” says Greenleaf’s Gerard Cote. All the lights are covered under Cree’s 10-year limited warranty, which, Moffitt says, is “epic in this business.” The long life of the LED fixtures provides additional benefits to Petty’s Garage and crew. “You’d have a bulb or two burn out, and you’d just put it off,” says master fabricator Doug Murph. “It was a nightmare,” he says, requiring a forklift and moving cars around.

“Our business here is to redo cars, not redo buildings and lights,” Petty says, “so the more time I spend on the car and less on the lights, the better I’m liking it.”

In sum, Petty says, “There’s really only one word to describe these lights: Wow!”

Cree | LED Lighting

Cree leads the LED lighting revolution and is making energy-wasting traditional lighting technologies obsolete through the use of energy-efficient, environmentally friendly LED lighting.

Cree first brought the blue LED to market in 1989, and today Cree's XLamp® LEDs have continually exceeded industry standards for brightness and efficiency. Indeed, XLamp LEDs were the first "lighting-class" LEDs – LEDS bright enough to be used in general-illumination applications, such as desk lamps, ceiling fixtures and street lights. In addition, Cree's extensive line of high-brightness LEDs are also introducing new performance levels to outdoor video displays and decorative lighting.

Recognizing the revolutionary potential of LED lighting, in 2008 Cree expanded its product lines into indoor LED-lighting applications, such as ceiling fixtures. in 2011 Cree expanded into outdoor lighting with the acquisition of Ruud Lighting, Inc., a leader in outdoor LED lighting. Ruud added an extensive LED-lighting product line to Cree's portfolio, including the BetaLED and LEDway brands.
